There is a clear rule when it comes to staff retention, and that is that staff do not leave businesses, they leave leaders. And good leaders are not born, this means that to be a true leader we need to continually observe and work on our behaviour. Over the years and the ten businesses I have owned, I have learnt that there are four key leadership traits that need to evolve in a true leader. These are Master, Mentor, Manager and Mate. Each of these traits has their own unique attributes and, when applied out of balance to one another, will inevitably cause problems.
